In addition to offering convenient Autoglass repairs, we believe that knowledge is power – so here are some of the most common forms that windshield damage takes, as well as what you should do about them.

Common Forms of Windshield Damage

Cracked windshield? Not all windshield damage is created equal. Here’s a quick list of the most common types of windshield damage so you can identify how serious your break is:

  • Stress Crack: Normally caused by temperature fluctuations, these are straight cracks that often start at the edge of the windshield and extend in. Usually, these make the whole windshield weaker, so it’s best to replace your windshield if you find one.
  • Star: This formation appears as a series of cracks that lead outward from the central impact point. This kind of crack is liable to spread, so it’s important to get it either repaired or replaced as soon as you can.
  • Bullseye: This type of damage leaves a circular indentation in the windshield. If it’s small enough, bullseye damage can often be repaired without needing to replace the windshield.
  • Surface Pit: This is a common form of wear and tear for windshield. Unless it’s larger than 1/8″ in diameter or within 4″ of another crack, or there are 4 or more surface pits on the windshield, it won’t require a windshield replacement.
