At Kirmac Collision & Autoglass, our mission is to get you back on the road as fast and conveniently as possible after your vehicle is damaged by a collision, impact, or other auto body damage. We offer comprehensive auto body repairs ranging from cosmetic damages to complete repair services following a major collision. One of the most common problems we fix is a damaged windshield. At highway speeds, even a small rock impacting your windshield can cause a chip or crack. It’s important to know when and where to repair a rock-damaged windshield.

What to Do If Your Windshield Gets Cracked or Chipped by a Rock

A rock can make a chip or crack in your windshield in a fraction of a second, and the realization that you’ve just sustained significant windshield damage from a pebble too small to kill a fly is a terrible feeling. But rest assured: there are many ways to fix a windshield.

If the rock is small enough, it will often create a chip in your windshield that follows a well-known pattern: these may look like tiny bullseyes, flower patterns, or stars, but the defining feature is that they create a chip in the windshield with a physical depression compared to the surface of the rest of the windshield. This kind of rock damage can often be repaired without a trip to the auto shop. By using store-bought adhesive windshield repair kits, you can fill in the chip with a strong adhesive, resealing the windshield and repairing the damage sufficiently to keep using the windshield.

This isn’t always an option, though. These kits only work for chips that create an ‘air pocket’ in the windshield: if you’re dealing with surface damage or a crack that runs through the windshield and doesn’t have a surface depression or air pocket, they won’t work. Furthermore, it’s important to remember that any damage to the windshield will weaken it, and while at home repairs can work, they’re usually delaying the inevitable. Once one chip or crack appears, it’s usually followed by spreading damage and will require a windshield replacement. Thankfully, we’ve got you covered.
