Vancouver Winter: Driving In Icy Conditions

At Kirmac Collision & Autoglass we understand that not everyone has experience driving in ice and snow and even if you do, it can quickly become a terrifying situation. While some situations can’t be avoided, it is best to know how to drive in winter conditions to keep yourself and others safe while on the road.

Safety First

This should go without saying and should always be your first move whether it is Winter or not, buckle your seatbelt! Especially in particularly harsh conditions, make sure you and your passengers are fully buckled up before you even start your engine. Make sure that your windshield, rear view mirror and side mirrors are all defrosted before you pull out of your driveway or parking spot as well. It may also be to your benefit to ensure that your exhaust pipe isn’t clogged with snow, mud or ice. Winter Driving BC Roads

Slow Down & Keep Calm

The best thing that you can do when driving in Winter conditions is to think slow. Not only is it best to drive slowly but also brake and accelerate slowly as well to avoid skidding. The best way to get going on ice and snow is to slowly accelerate and use inertia to go forward and uphill. The worst thing that you can do is stop when you are halfway uphill, make sure to use your momentum so that you don’t have to accelerate while going up.

Avoid Losing Control

It will happen at one time or another when you accelerate or brake too quickly and find yourself skidding out on the road. The first thing to remember is not to break when you begin to glide out of control, that will only make things worse. Avoid braking and take your foot off of the gas. The next thing to do is steer the car in the direction you want it to go or steer into a spin. Once you have gained back control of the vehicle it is safe to slowly brake, take a deep breath and regain control of your drive.
