How Often Should I Have My Car Checked?

At Kirmac Collision & Autoglass, we’re proud to offer world-class auto repair services to help you get back on the road and on with your life as quickly as possible after an accident. But when it comes to cars, prevention is better than cure. Routinely having your car checked and tuned up is critical to preventing more serious problems, and if you’re wondering how frequently you should have your car checked, here’s a quick guide.

When to Have Your Car Checked

Wondering if it’s time to bring your car in for a checkup? Here’s how frequently you should get different parts of your car looked at:

  • Fluids: In addition to checkups with a professional auto mechanic, you should also routinely inspect your car for problems. This particularly applies to fluids like coolant and oil, which should be inspected regularly.
  • Oil: Oil should be changed somewhere between every 5,000 and 7,500 kilometers, but the frequency varies from car to car. Check your owner’s manual for the exact recommendation or follow your vehicle’s prompts.
  • Tires: In addition to regularly checking tire pressure, you’ll want to get your tires rotated and checked periodically. Again, refer to your owner’s manual for exact frequency.
  • Belts: Generally speaking, you should replace your car’s serpentine belt every 60,000 – 65,000 kilometers and your timing belt every 100,000 kilometers.
  • Windshield Wipers: Noticing streaking every time you try to clean your windshield? That means it’s time to replace your windshield wipers, although we’d recommend replacing these every 6 months regardless.
  • Full Service: In addition to self checks and replacements, you should bring your car into an auto shop for a full service every year or around 24,000 kilometers, whichever comes first. This helps ensure you don’t miss any budding problems, preventing them from getting worse and causing a breakdown.
